In Year 4 this term our overall topic is based on the theme of 'adventures'.

In English - we will be studying the books, The Man Who's Mother Was A Pirate as well as reading and writing non-fiction texts. We will be using the film E.T. as the basis for one of our English units.

In Geography - we will be learning about volcanoes, mountains, rivers and the water cycle. We will be using maps and atlases to locate places near and far and researching physical features.

In Science - we will explore solids, liquids and gases.

In Maths we will be continuing to build on the knowledge and skills in the areas of; addition, subtraction, problem solving and multiplication. Please help your child to learn their times tables to 12 x 12 and the related division facts.

Please look through the curriculum overview for the Autumn Term to find out what other exciting things we will be learning.

We would welcome any parent helpers, especially those who can spare time to come and listen to readers or help us with our times tables. Please contact Mrs Waters or Miss Egginton to arrange coming in. Any amount of time you can spare is extremely helpful.

We encourage children to read as often as possible at home, or for you to read to them. Please let us know how they doing through making a note in their homework diary.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and will need to be returned on a Wednesday.

Spellings will be given out on Tuesdays and tested the following Tuesday.

Practice times tables daily please Read at least 5 x per week please.

Please let us know if your child found anything particulary tricky. Homework should take about 20 minutes per item (unless they're so absorbed they want to keep working!). If, after this time, the homework is becoming a battle, please send it back into school where we will help your child with it.

As children are required to know their multiplication tables up to 12x12 by the end of Year 4, a key area of focus is to develop our multiplication tables knowledge. Strong multiplication table knowledge is crucial in many areas of maths and children should be able to recall these quickly and confidently. On top of your child's weekly mathematics homework, children should spend some time each week practising their times tables. Please enjoy exploring the times table activities below:

Have you found some other fun times table activities? Come and let us know - 4EW would love to hear about them.
