Miss Higham

Year 4 Teacher

Mrs Wilde

HLTA

Welcome to 4H

4H is taught by Miss Higham and Mrs Wilde, our HLTA, takes the class on Monday afternoons.

Please use our class page to find out about what we are learning and doing during the year.  More detailed information about the class theme can be found by opening the 'Curriculum Plan' which can be found in 'Files to download' lower down the class homepage.

Our theme for Autumn Term is 'Awesome Adventures'.

In Geography we will be learning all about the physical features of mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes. We will also be learning about the features of rivers and the water cycle. In Music, we will be listening and responding to music, as well as learning about beats and rhythms.  In Design and Techonology, we shall be learning how to create a patchwork bag. In Science we will be learning about states of matter, looking at materials and whether they are solids, liquids and gases.

English

This half term we will focus on adventures in fairy tales. We will be retelling well known fairy tales and also planning and writing our own alternative fairy tales to read to the younger children.  We will consolidate our use of expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials. Our language choices and ensuring that our writing is cohesive will also be an area for development.

In year 4, we will have a strong focus on handwriting and spelling.  A list of year 4 words that the children need to learn to spell can be found at the bottom of the page in 'Files to download'.

Mathematics

In maths the children will develop their ability and knowledge in the following concepts.  Through a mastery style of teaching the children will develop their fluency in these areas as well as an ability to reason and problem solve using this knowledge. Our initial focus ill be on place value.

The children will learn:

  • to recognise the place value of each digit in a four-digit number
  • to partition four-digit numbers in different ways
  • to order and compare numbers beyond 1000
  • find 1000 more or less than a given number
  • to use place value understanding to place numbers on a number line

Useful Websites

Times tables:

As children are required to know their multiplication tables up to 12x12 by the end of Year 4, a key area of focus is to develop our multiplication tables knowledge and become times table superstars! Strong multiplication table knowledge is crucial in many areas of maths and children should be able to recall these quickly and confidently. On top of your child's weekly mathematics homework, children should spend some time each week practising their times tables. Please enjoy exploring the times table activities below:

Homework

It would be really beneficial for the children to read at least 5 times a week.  Even though most children are able to read independently in Year 4, it would be great if they could read with an adult a couple of times a week.  To develop their higher level comprehension skills, please use some of the questions suggested in the documents to download. The children still love being read to, so please continue to read to them too!  It's a great way of extending their vocabulary and providing them with their own ideas for story writing.

Along with regular reading and learning times tables, the children will have spellings to learn and homework will be set weekly to consolidate their understanding of key skills in English and Maths.

The children also have access to Times Tables Rockstars which is a website that will help to develop their multiplication and division knowledge. Please check your child's Maths homework book for their individual login.
