HLTA

Welcome to 4H

4H is taught by Miss Higham and Mrs Wilde, our HLTA, takes the class on Monday mornings.

Please use our class page to find out about what we are learning and doing during the year.  More detailed information about the class theme can be found by opening the 'Curriculum Plan' which can be found in 'Files to download' lower down the class homepage.

Our theme for SummerTerm is 'Naughty Neighbours'.

We have lots of exciting learning opportunities planned and can't wait to get started!

In History, we will be learning all about the Vikings using our research skills to find out more about their way of life. Following our unit on the Vikings, we will be moving onto looking at our local area in Geography. In Science, we will be learning about sound, looking in more detail at how sound is made and how it travels. We will then focus on electricity, identifying appliances that use electricity and creating our own circuits. In Music, we will be listening and responding to music, as well as learning about beats and rhythms.  In Art, we will be continuing to explore the artist Frida Kahlo. In Design and Technology, our focus will be on creating healthy food.

English

This half term, we will be continuing to use the rainforest as the basis of our writing. We will be writing non-chronological reports based on rainforest animals while continung to consider the environmental impacts of humans.

In year 4, we will have a strong focus on handwriting and spelling.  A list of year 4 words that the children need to learn to spell can be found at the bottom of the page in 'Files to download'.

Mathematics

In maths the children will develop their ability and knowledge in the following concepts.  Through a mastery style of teaching the children will develop their fluency in these areas as well as an ability to reason and problem solve using this knowledge. Over the term, we will focus on mulitplication and division, area, fractions and decimals.

The children will learn:

  • recognising tenths and hundreths as fraction and decimals
  • round demicals with one decimal place to the nearest whole number
  • compare decimals up to two decimal places
  • the effect of dividing by 10 and 100
  • solve simple measure and money problems using fractions and decimals

Useful Websites

Times tables:

As children are required to know their multiplication tables up to 12x12 by the end of Year 4, a key area of focus is to develop our multiplication tables knowledge and become times table superstars! Strong multiplication table knowledge is crucial in many areas of maths and children should be able to recall these quickly and confidently. On top of your child's weekly mathematics homework, children should spend some time each week practising their times tables. Please enjoy exploring the times table activities below:

https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth - every child has an individual login for Times Tables Rock Stars.

Homework

It would be really beneficial for the children to read at least 5 times a week.  Even though most children are able to read independently in Year 4, it would be great if they could read with an adult a couple of times a week.  To develop their higher level comprehension skills, please use some of the questions suggested in the documents to download. The children still love being read to, so please continue to read to them too!  It's a great way of extending their vocabulary and providing them with their own ideas for story writing.

Along with regular reading and learning times tables, the children will have spellings to learn and homework will be set weekly to consolidate their understanding of key skills in English and Maths.

The children also have access to Times Tables Rockstars which is a website that will help to develop their multiplication and division knowledge. Please check your child's Maths homework book for their individual login.
