Welcome to 4Hi!

We have lots of exciting learning and activities for our Spring term. Our theme for the Spring term is ‘Volatile Volcanoes and Raging Rivers’. We aim for our lessons to be as cross-curricular as possible to create a broad learning experience. In our Geography lessons, we will be learning all about the formation of volcanoes, mountains and rivers as well as learning about what causes earthquakes. Planned activities include learning about the layers of the Earth, tectonic plate movements and how the water cycle of our planet influences our rivers. We will also include cross-curricular learning in English; this will include non-fiction writing about the process of an volcanic eruption and fictional diary writing about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79 based on the text Escape from Pompeii.

In our other learning, we will be learning writing our versions of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in French and learning about the weather and seasons. In PSHCE, our learning will focus on our safety in Spring 1 and our similarities and differences in Spring 2. Our Science lessons in Spring 1 will focus on the body, specifically focusing on the human digestive system and our teeth. In Spring 2, we will learn all about electricity and circuits which will link with our Design and Technology learning where we will create our own lighthouses. In Spring 1 Art, we will be looking at painting and how to create tints and shades to create a 3D painting. In Computing, we will use Espresso Coding to learn about variables, repetition and loops in coding.

Homework

It would be really beneficial for the children to read at least 5 times a week.  Even though most children are able to read independently in Year 4, it would be great if they could read with an adult two or three times a week to develop their reading fluency skills.  To develop their higher level comprehension skills, please use some of the questions suggested in the documents to download. The children still love being read to, so please continue to read to them too!  It’s a great way of extending their vocabulary and providing them with their own ideas for story writing.

Along with regular reading and learning times tables, the children will have spellings to learn and homework will be set weekly to consolidate their understanding of key skills in English and Maths.

The children also have access to Times Tables Rockstars which is a website that will help to develop their multiplication and division knowledge. Please check your child’s Maths homework book for their individual login.

Reading & English:

We have included links below for recommended books for Year 4 children as well as some games to improve spelling and grammar.

Maths & Times tables:

As children are required to know their multiplication tables up to 12×12 by the end of Year 4, a key area of focus is to develop our multiplication tables knowledge and become times table superstars! Strong multiplication table knowledge is crucial in many areas of maths and children should be able to recall these quickly and confidently. On top of your child’s weekly mathematics homework, children should spend some time each week practising their times tables. Please enjoy exploring the times table activities below:
