Welcome to 5Ho

Please use our class page to keep up to date with all the things 5Ho are doing in school. You will find information about our topic, procedural information, files you might like to browse about our curriculum and timetable and a reading list for year 5 children.

Use the calendar to keep up to date with year 5 trips and events, and regularly check the website for photos of the children throughout the year.

Our Summer 2017 theme is: The Americas

During the third school term this year, we will be learning all about history and geography of the Americas (an area including North, South and central America). This topic allows us to study ancient cultures including the Maya, Aztec and Inca. We will learn about the landscape and geographical features of this varied and enormous area of the world. In addition, we will look at literature by reading 'Journey to the River Sea' by Eva Ibbotson, make mayan headwear in D&T with Mrs Bowmaker, learn about music across the Americas, including native music, rock 'n' roll, jazz and hip hop. It promises to be an interesting term.

Homework

Please note that Homework will be set on a Friday. This will be due at a time specified in the children's homework diaries - most English and Maths homework will be due by Wednesday of the next week at the latest, and any topic related projects will usually be given extra time. All children are expected to read at home and use Mathletics regularly in addition to the homework that may be set.

It is very important that children practice their times tables. Children are expected to know times tables to 12x12 by year 4 and much of the work that we do in maths lessons requires a good times tables recall. Please come and discuss this with me in school at any time if it is proving difficult.

Please note - children who are not yet fluent with times tables will be required to attend morning break sessions in order to boost their skills.

Diaries

Children are expected to note down any reading they do at home in their diary. Children should write down all their homework tasks in their diary on the day it is given along with a due date. Homework diaries will be signed weekly by Mr Hope, and as such, should be in school every day.

Outline of the Week

Monday - Times table test

Tuesday - PE kit needed

Wednesday - PE kit needed; homework handed in

Thursday - Mrs Bowmaker AM

Friday - Diaries signed; homework given out; Maths Pop Test

Due to inclement weather conditions, it is recommended that kit is kept in school all week unless dirty and taken home at the weekend. This will enable us to enjoy PE lessons outside of our normal timetabled slot whenever this may be necassary.
